![]() Impact of Big Business Failures Our Current National Economic Crisis was caused by Mismanagement of many Major Corporations. Federal tax dollars are being spent to bail some businesses out of trouble. Millions of jobs are being terminated, homes are also being foreclosed and prices of ordinary goods and services have increased to accommodate the precarious situation. Was this dilema created through negligence, greed or lack of knowledge? Many feel that it was a combination of all three. Promises are now being made by our President-Elect, Barack Obama, to create new jobs and help boost businesses and the economy. Which means more tax dollars will be spent to equalize the downward spiral. Yes, Americans have been asking for change, but is everyone prepared for these changes? Obama has a "transition team," but ordinary citizens do not. The same folk who could not get jobs before the crisis, will more than likely be the same ones who will not be able to get jobs after the crisis is over because they are not qualified, uneducated, untrained and unskilled. Education is the foundation for employment and entrepreneurship. A child out of school, Is a child left behind and unprepared for the job market or for business ownership, which means more tax dollars spent to support their unreadiness either through welfare supplements or incarceration expenses. President-Elect Obama Has Already Asked For Our Help We can't help reduce tax dollars spent on business "bail-outs," Parents of children who are experiencing school conflicts ... Building Business Ventures: African American businesses on the Eastern shore of Virginia are few in number and some struggle to merely exist. Storefront businesses are virtually non-existent. To build and maintain your own stores and other types of businesses with the intent to profit from them together is a new goal that needs to be set. Actually it's not a new goal. It's an old goal initiated by your African ancestors. A mission that was soon destroyed by "integration" and all the unfulfilled promises that decision created. It's time to again focus on being business owners and employers, rather than being complacent with a status of being mainly unemployed, underemployed or underpaid. Money doesn't automatically show up because you opened a business, especially if your business is new and not your typical kind of venture. People flock to purchase food, clothes, shoes, technology, toys, etc. But they don't form a line so easily to buy advice. In short, people tend to buy what they want more than what they need. Of course, the option is theirs. Yet sometimes life will force you to seek that which you think you can do without. And we all learn sooner or later how important good advice can be. That's why the information highway, the internet, was created. So we can communicate with many people all over the world about many subjects. To get ideas and advice such as that being provided by this website. Starting a business from scratch is a lot more risky than taking over an existing business because you don't have any proof, other than gut feeling, that you will be successful. There are no already established clients from a previous owner and no public offices already set up. So some might ask why a bronzed skin, single woman would pursue such a business on the Eastern Shore of Virginia? And I ask, "why not?" There's a shortage of jobs but no shortage of problems on the shore or elsewhere. Many businesses have closed due to unresolved conflicts and mismanagement. If they had talked to me, they might still be up and running. With time, fortitude and support from others who care about your success, anyone can persevere. The NAACP: The mission of this national organization is to improve the political, educational, social and economic status of minority groups. The rumor mill had determined that the local NAACP was defunct and no longer available to the area. So when it was announced that not only was the group still in operation, but was in fact installing officers, I attended to get firsthand information. During the November 27th meeting of the Accomack County branch NAACP, the association's president, Rev. A. C. Sinclair, spent most of the session, while I was present, discussing plans for an upcoming baby contest as a fund raiser. When he asked me to introduce myself to the group, I stated my interest in any information regarding the recent activities of their attempts to deal with school conflicts and other community issues that directly affect African Americans. What work was being done that was relevant to their mission? Rev. Sinclair stated that he had recently resolved several school and employment issues, but could not give any details. His inability to get a consensus in time for the recent public meeting concerning the proposal to build a Wal-Mart store in Onley, Virginia was stated as the reason there had not been a voice on behalf of the association for or against the proposal at the session. Now I don't envy Rev. Sinclair's position and know firsthand that the politics can get so cloudy that you can never be sure you're talking with the right people who will honestly consider what you have to say. And sometimes the person who agrees with you may not be able to sway the vote in your favor. It's a dirty and often thankless job, and he's doing things in his familiar way. Maybe "familiar" is the factor that needs to be adjusted. They are still fighting inequalities with the same old methods, which means they will continue to get the same minute results. But I believe, and have always believed, there is another way to improve the political, educational, social and economic status of African Americans. To truly change the status quo, African Americans need to stop crawling around on the floor of dependency and stand up and take care of themselves and each other as a group. They need to stop blaming everybody else for their economic status. They must take responsibility for themselves as a people. "Respect is earned." I'm sure you've been told that most of your life. But what have you done to deserve respect as a group? As long as you don't pool your efforts to become as independent as other races, you can expect to get the mere crumbs others leave behind. A prime example of blocking your own fortune. Of course it is not possible to make such "radical" changes overnight. But you have to start a journey in order to finish it. I challenge you to find others who want to build through a cooperative effort and begin taking steps toward a joint venture. The first step is to develop a plan and a backup plan.
